NLP Hypnosis Manchester - Why therapy works
We face psychological challenges in life: overcoming our limiting beliefs, our unwanted habits and our emotional weaknesses can be a life-long challenge. Sometimes these problems become really disruptive. Sometimes our life would be so much better... if only we could do things differently.
Our behaviour can sometimes seem difficult to understand. And yet, there are factors at play that can be understood. From the simplest habit to the most complex set of circumstances, our cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems can be understood and worked with.
As an example, imagine a person with social anxiety. There will be certain things going on that can be observed and changed:
- Cognitive: e.g. negative self-talk and self-censoring; worried thoughts when around others.
- Emotional: e.g feelings of fear and discomfort in social situations.
- Behavioural: e.g. avoiding speaking up in groups, habitually refusing social invitations.
- Triggered responses: blushing or anxiety when feeling "on the spot".
- Limiting beliefs: negative ideas about oneself, held as true without being challenged.
- The past: memories of being bullied or family problems which still "pop" into consciousness, even years later.
- The future: e.g. the unshakable belief that things will never improve.
In the example above, social anxiety is comprised of different levels. Psychological matters can be viewed in this way. My work as a therapist has lead to a solid understanding of the difficulties we face.
Here's the important bit: according to some research, up to 80% of the things we do are done without conscious thought or control. So, no matter what difficulties you are experiencing, you will feel that you have little or no control over them.
This is when people need therapy. I am focused on helping people overcome such difficulties in life. I do this by using techniques that are designed to free people from the automatic thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviours that hold them back.
My strength as a therapist is that I understand this completely - it is why I offer an expert service. Some hypnotherapists will just use standard scripts. I guarantee there is nothing standard about my approach.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does therapy involve?
In the first session, we'll define the goals that you want to achieve with your therapy. What do you want more of? What do you want to let go of? We'll work out precisely what you want to change...
I will explain the psychology of your current difficulties. Knowing the thought processes involved is a good step in the right direction. Many of my clients comment on how interesting it is to understand the things we do in more detail. I'll then explain the steps we'll take to help you achieve your therapy goals.
I like to keep the sessions relaxed, interesting and where possible enjoyable. I will introduce you to different therapy techniques: certain visualisation exercise, reviewing your self-talk, removing old troubling memories, perhaps teaching you how to feel better in certain situations. I draw from a wide range of techniques and my approach is dynamic and flexible. It is through these techniques that changes start to emerge from within.
In later sessions, we'll refer back to the goals we defined to ensure that we're making progress. After a number of sessions, people often forget they even mentioned certain issues: the changes can really be that dramatic. People end therapy feeling happy that they are making progress and ready to get on with their lives...
I tend to use a lot of hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming in my work because I've found it to be incredibly effective. Have a read through the FAQ below and if you have any further questions or comments, you can always get in touch.
Is hypnosis dangerous?
Hypnosis is not dangerous in any way. It involves a gentle relaxation coupled with an inner focus. This is really healthy, reducing stress and discomfort, and can relieve hypertension, anxiety and pain. Hypnosis also helps to foster feelings of self-control, increased self-confidence, enhanced emotional well-being, and a freedom from past traumas. It is an incredible tool for bringing about psychological change.
Hypnotherapy has been recognised by the British Medical
Association since 1955. I am experienced, insured, and fully qualified to practice.
In hypnosis, are you are asleep or unconscious (i.e. “Put under”)?
Hypnosis has nothing to do with being unconscious. People are often very alert when hypnotised. Think of it like a really vivid daydream - it is often very pleasant.
Are there people who cannot be hypnotised?
Some people are easier to hypnotise than others, but everyone can be hypnotised if they want to be. Some people find it easier than others to begin with, but - like everything - it gets easier with practice.
Isn't it only the weak-minded or weak-willed that can be hypnotised?
There has been a lot of scientific research into whether specific personality traits correlate with being “more hypnotisable”. According to research the ability to be hypnotised does not correlate with any specific personality trait (Kirsch & Council, 1992), including a person’s capacity for 'a strong will' (Kirsh, Lynn, & Rhue, 1993; 1996).
Hypnosis is not some form of mind control. There is simply no connection between being ’strong willed’ or ‘weak willed’ and hypnosis.
Can I be hypnotised to do or say something against my will?
Virtually all hypnotherapists will tell you that you can’t be made to do anything you don’t want to do, and that is essentially true.
The conditions necessary to brainwash a person are just not found in a hypnotherapy session (Yapko, 2003). Hypnosis doesn’t make you gullible, stupid, or blind. Also:
- I am a full member of the General Hypnotherapy Register
(GHR) which is a respected organisation.
- I am fully bound by their code of ethics.
- I am fully insured to practice hypnotherapy
and NLP.
I am a professional therapist, and you will always be treated
with the utmost respect throughout any therapy session.
Will I tell you all of my secrets?
Hypnosis is not a truth serum - a hypnotised person can still decide what they do or do not want to say. You still have free will. You don’t have to do, or say, anything that you do not want to.
Can I get “stuck” in hypnosis?
No - hypnosis is more like reading a good book or watching a good film - you could never get 'stuck' there. In hypnosis, you are always in control.
I don't believe in hypnosis, it's just simple relaxation / acting / meditation, etc...
Hypnosis is not simple relaxation. No one would expect to undergo surgery painlessly using simple relaxation. If you would like to see more hypno-anesthesia (and you’re not squeamish) then click here (WARNING: contains operation theatre footage).
There is more to hypnosis than just relaxing.
Expectation and social factors do play a part in hypnosis. However, whether hypnosis is a special state, a transactional outcome, a socio-cognitive experience, or all of the above and more, one thing is for certain: it is not just mere relaxation.
Will hypnosis make me remember bad things from my past?
Some people fear that bad memories might “come up” when experiencing hypnosis. However, in my years of practicing I have never, ever seen this. Where really bad things have happened in a person's life they know about it, even if they cannot remember the details. Hypnosis is a safe, healing tool for change and you don't need to worry about bad memories - it doesn't happen that way.
What is NLP?
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a form of psychotherapy that began as a study of therapeutic communication. From there it grew into a study of how and why we behave in the way we do, making it a type of experimental psychology.
From this, NLP has now grown to be used in a wide range of fields, such as sports science, sales and marketing, business communication, health and medicine, and education. NLP is a systematic approach to changing the way we think, behave and communicate in order to improve our experience of life.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (in therapy sessions) usually involves some talking, some visualising and some hypnosis-type exercises.
Okay, so the therapy is safe and professional. How much will I pay?
